Markets are a great drawcard for any town and people travel to Berry in their thousands on foot, by bus, car and train on the first Sunday of each month for market day.
Shopping in the beautiful rural town, famous for its gardens, arts and crafts and antiques, is very popular with tourists and rather like taking a step back to a time less hurried. The township with a population of around 2000 is surrounded by lush, rolling dairy land and with its lovely old buildings, avenues and streets with lots of trees, has maintained the atmosphere of an unspoilt country town. Some of the beautifully restored buildings are protected by National Trust classification in recognition of their significance to the heritage of the region.Berry is one of the Shoalhaven's oldest settlements. It was named after explorer Alexander Berry who took up land grants and was the first white settler in the area.On market day, the action is at the showground with a vast array of stalls from the freshest of produce direct from the grower to homemade jams, sauces, pickles, cakes and sweets. There are handcrafts and gifts as well as art, furniture, toys and exotic plants.
